The 40% Rule

For a more scholarly take on TOD (transit-oriented development) check out this recent article from Mass Transit magazine. And always, always bear in mind that around 40% of all mass transit trips in the United States take place in the New York metropolitan area. New York's percentage of rail transit usage is even higher. So a new light rail line in St. Louis (which I have been discussing in recent posts) needs to be seen in proper context. That is, the rest of the country outside New York has a lot of catching up to do.
